From “There Is a Saying in Brazil…” to Thoughts from Brasil

Hi, I’m Mariana.

In January 2018, I moved from the State of Rio to Vancouver, Canada, as a student with a dream of building a new life and, eventually, calling this country home.

Life in Canada has had its ups and downs, but with faith, perseverance, and the support of the people around me, I found my place here. Now, almost a decade later, I decided it was time to take a leap and bring something I’ve always wanted to share to life:

A little piece of Brazilian culture, right here in Canada.

I’ve always been the communicative one, especially when it comes to Brazilian expressions. Whenever I found myself explaining one of our slang phrases or sayings to Canadians or people from other countries, I would start with: “There is a saying in Brazil…”

And then came the literal translation. Things like: “This way you break my legs.” Or: “It’s another 500.”

Completely confusing in English. Completely normal in Portuguese.

And somehow, they always made people laugh. Those conversations often turned into something even better: people sharing similar expressions from Canada or from their own cultures. What started as a funny translation became a way of connecting through language, culture, and a little bit of curiosity. That’s where the idea for Thoughts from Brasil began.

I wanted to bring those expressions into everyday life, starting with something that feels very Brazilian to me: coffee. ☕

After many ideas, conversations with friends, and a lot of “what ifs,” Thoughts from Brasil finally came to life.

And yes, Brasil with an S. A tiny detail I’ve had to explain more times than I can count since moving here. 😂

Today, Thoughts from Brasil is my way of sharing the humor, expressions, and little cultural moments that make Brazil feel like home — even thousands of kilometres away. Because sometimes, all it takes to bring a little bit of home with you is a familiar phrase, a good laugh, and a cup of coffee.

I’m incredibly grateful to God for bringing me this far, and to my partner, whose talent and hard work help turn these ideas and designs into something real.

Welcome to Thoughts from Brasil. A little Brazilian humor, one phrase, and one coffee, at a time. ☕🇧🇷

More than
just
slang and memes, we share a feeling.

Brazilian humor is our way of showing affection and resilience, that laugh that rises in the middle of chaos, mixing irony, love, and emotional survival.

For those living abroad, we’re a hug disguised as sarcasm.
For those who’ve never lived in Brazil, we’re an invitation to understand why we laugh so much, even when everything seems to be falling apart.
And the best part? We sprinkle in some Canadian slang, too, because cultural exchange is what flavors our brand.

 Thoughts from Brasil:

Exporting Brazilian humor to the world, starting in Vancouver.

Here, every mug tells a story.

Welcome!☕
